Introduction 

Various awards and honours are given by the Indian Government every year in the field of art, social service, literature, public affairs, medicine, trade, social work, sports etc.

These awards are given with the purpose to motivate those people who are working for the well being of the society.

These awards and honours are given to people irrespective of their age, religion, caste, gender and occupation. Some awards are given with certificate and some with cash prize. These honours are given by the President every year on Independence and Republic day.

The award and honours by the Indian Government are divided in various categories:

  1. Civilian Awards

  2. Gallantry Awards

  3. Sports Awards

  4. Other awards


Civilian Awards

These are awarded to those people who have achieved exceptional recognition in their service. These awards were instituted in the year 1954.

These are divided into two categories:

  1. Bharat Ratna

The Bharat Ratna is the highest civilian award of the country. This award is given to those people who have performed exceptionally well  in the field of art, literature, science and public service. 

The youngest and the first sportsperson to receive this award is Sachin Tendulkar.

The Prime Minister of India can nominate the name for this award. The Prime Minister can nominate only 3 names for this award in an year. Till now, this award has been given to only 48 people.


  1. Padma Awards - It is given in the field of art, science, public service, Government service.

 Padma awards do no include any cash allowances, benefits or special concessions in rail/air travels. 

These are divided into three categories:

  • Padma Vibhushan

It is the second highest civilian award of India. It is awarded for ‘exceptional and distinguished service’. 

  • Padma Bhushan

It is the third highest civilian award of India.

It is awarded for ‘distinguished service of high order’.

  • Padma Shri

It is the fourth highest civilian award of India.

It is awarded ‘distinguished service'. 


Gallantry Awards

These awards are given to military personnel for their bravery and dedicated service.

These awards are divided into two categories:

  1. Wartime gallantry awards 

These were established on 26th January with retrospective effect from 15th August 1947.

  • Param Vir Chakra

It is the highest military award of India. It is awarded for National bravery in the presence of the enemy. 

Major Somnath Sharma was the first army person to receive this award.

  •  Maha Vir Chakra

It is the 2nd Highest military award of India. It is awarded for acts of conspicuous gallantry in the presence of the enemy, whether on land, sea or air.

  • Vir Chakra

It is the 3rd highest military award of India. It is awarded for wartime gallantry.


  1. Peacetime Awards

These awards were instituted on 4th January 1952. These awards are given to soldiers for their bravery in non war time.

  • Ashok Chakra

  • Kirti Chakra

  • Shaurya Chakra


National Sports Awards

These are awarded to sportsperson for their excellent performance. 

Sports Awards also include cash prizes along with the medals. 

These awards are given every year by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in India.

Some of the famous sports awards are 

  1. Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award

It is the highest sports honour in India. Cash prize of 25lakhs is also given with this award.

In 1992, for the first time this award was given to chess player Vishvanathan Anand.

In cricket, this award has been given to four players: Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.


  1.  Arjuna Award

This award was established in the year in the year 1961.

It is the second highest award in the field of sports.

It is given to sportsperson based on their performance in Olympic, Paralympic, Asian Games, Commonwealth games and World championship and Cricket World Cup.


  1. Dronacharya Award

This award is given to outstanding coaching in sports and games. This award was established in the year 1985.


  1. Major Dhyan Chand Award

It is the life time achievement award in sports and games. It is given to sportsperson for their  outstanding records in the game. The names of the players for this award is nominated after their retirement.

  • Jnanpith Award – It is the highest literary award in Literature of India.

  • Sahitya Akademi Award

Effects of Non-Registration

 Effects of Non-Registration The Companies Act, 2013 evidently highlights that the main essential for any organization to turn into a company is to get itself registered. A company cannot come into existence until it gets registered. But no such obligation has been imposed for firms by the Indian Partnership Act, 1932.
