Recently, a bill has been introduced in the Lok Shabha , The Prohibition of Child Marriage (Amendment) Bill,2021, which increases the age of marriage for women from 18 years to 21 years. And also, increase the period in which a marriage by a minor can be canceled. According to The Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2005 Sec 3(3), child marriage is voidable and can be canceled by the parties after 2 years of attaining the majority. This by the bill has been increase to 5 years.

In India women still doesn’t enjoy equal rights as men. Not, the society let them to enjoy. Article 14 of the Indian Constitution talks about right to equality but on the other hand the marriage age for both the gender is different. Also, there are many jobs which are not opened for female.

This bill is solving the first issue and bringing equality among both the gender for marriage age. The Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2005 have discriminated the marriage age for male and female, for the former it is 21 years and for the latter it is 18 years. Which goes with the ideology that female become mature before than a male and therefore they can be got married with 18 years of age.

Now, how this bill will affect the Country, in India still girls are not treated as equal as boys. Maximum parents of girls, think that the girl is someone else’s property (Paraya Dhan) and they should marry her as soon as possible and then it will be the responsibility of her in laws. This bill will help in reducing this ideology as when the girl marriage age will be 21 she will also be able to study or not if studies then she will able to take care of her in-laws and herself better than what she was expected to do when she was just 18 years old.

After marriage the whole burden comes on the girls shoulder for managing the house, then children and everything. But no one understands that how a girl, who is still a child, will be able to handle a child.  A report shows that the girls who give birth to a child before the age of 20 years have a greater risk of disease like, bleeding during pregnancy, toxemia, hemorrhage, prolonged, etc.

This bill will benefit girls, as in the rural areas as soon as, the girls married she is forced by the family to have a child or rather there VARISH.
